About the First Five Years
The ‘First Five Years: From Book-smart to Streetwise’ largely documents the early career journey of a young professional in Nigeria. The author, who is a Nigerian lawyer in a leading Nigerian law firm, holds nothing back in sharing details of her career trajectory, infusing lively anecdotes and authentic narrations. Replete with vulnerability, every young professional looking to navigate the first five years of their career will find it very relatable. The memoir is set out in Seven (7) Chapters, garnished with extracts of the author’s journals, personal statements or motivation letters and several other published writings.
Chapter 1 is titled ‘Serendipity’ and is centred around the key events leading to my choice of law as a career.
Chapter 2 is titled ‘Solid Foundation’ and opens with her struggle to get into a top tier law firm and navigate the transition from the life of a student to a young professional in the first year of her career.
Chapter 3 titled the ‘Million Dollar Questions’ is journey to discover the answers to the usual million dollar questions newly qualified lawyers usually deal with.
In Chapter 4, I talk about my attempt to have a life outside of ‘please find attached’.
In Chapter 5, I talk about living in ‘unprecedent times’ like everyone else.
I title Chapter 6 ‘Anchored’. I decided to play the cards that I was dealt and see where that would lead.
Chapter 7 – ‘My Reflections from A-Z’’ is a compilation of a 26-day series initially published on LinkedIn.
