Ethics of clinical practice have become enormously important as the great advances of science and technology have changed the practice of medicine. Clinical ethics, which used to be passed between professional generations through prolonged apprenticeship, is in danger of being seriously compromised when its volume, complexity and importance have greatly increased beyond the traditional bedside manner. The period of learning ethics has been shortened as emphasis on Consultant appointment has shifted from apprenticeship to promotion based on academic achievements and ranked earnings often accelerated by “industrial strikes’’. The result is that many practitioners achieve the Consultant status ahead of sound professional maturity.
